What Is LUFS and Why Should Podcasters Care?

LUFS stands for Loudness Units relative to Full Scale. It measures how loud your audio sounds to a human listener, not just how high the waveform peaks. Platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify use loudness normalization to keep all shows at a consistent listening level. If your podcast is mastered too hot, they’ll turn it down and squash your dynamic range. If it’s too quiet, they’ll boost it and amplify every breath and background hum. Getting your LUFS right before you publish means the listener hears exactly what you intended.

Loudness Standards by Platform

Apple Podcasts recommends −16 LUFS with a true peak of −1.0 dBTP. Spotify and YouTube both target −14 LUFS with the same peak ceiling. For broadcast distribution (ATSC A/85), the standard is −24 LUFS with a stricter −2.0 dBTP peak limit. This tool checks your file against all four standards at once so you can see where you stand before publishing.

How to Fix Podcast Loudness Issues

If your episode is too quiet, apply gentle compression and then use a limiter to bring the integrated loudness up to your target. If it’s too loud, lower the output gain before your final limiter stage. For true peak issues, add a true peak limiter as the very last plugin in your chain. Most DAWs include one, or you can use a free tool like Youlean Loudness Meter to monitor as you adjust. The goal is to land within the platform’s comfort zone so normalization leaves your audio untouched.
